Mission Golden Spice

Why in News?

Recently, the Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) launched Mission Golden Spice, an integrated initiative aimed at strengthening the Lakadong Turmeric value chain in Meghalaya.

The mission seeks to move beyond turmeric cultivation and focus on the entire value chain, including production, processing, value addition and market development.

What is Mission Golden Spice?

Mission Golden Spice is a five-year roadmap for 2025–2030 focused on turmeric cultivation and value-chain development in Meghalaya. It is specifically centred on Lakadong Turmeric, a high-value turmeric variety associated with the Jaintia Hills region.

The initiative is anchored by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and the North Eastern Council (NEC). It follows a convergence-based approach, bringing together various government schemes, institutions and agencies working in agriculture, food processing, trade, technology and rural finance.

The mission will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will focus on Value Chain Strengthening, while the second will concentrate on Expansion and Scale-up.

Institutional Convergence

Mission Golden Spice brings together interventions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Food Processing Industries and Ministry of Commerce along with institutions such as APEDA, Spices Board, National Turmeric Board, ICAR, MeitY, NABARD, SFAC and the Government of Meghalaya.

This convergence is intended to strengthen the turmeric ecosystem from cultivation to processing and market access, while improving opportunities for farmers and other stakeholders involved in the value chain.

Lakadong Turmeric

Lakadong Turmeric is primarily cultivated in the Lakadong area of Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. It is particularly known for its high curcumin content, ranging from 7% to 12%, which gives it distinctive quality and commercial value.

It is darker in colour and is traditionally grown organically without the use of fertilisers. The variety received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024, providing recognition to its geographical identity and traditional production characteristics.

Curcumin, the major bioactive compound in turmeric, is associated with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, contributing to the growing demand for high-quality turmeric in domestic and international markets.

Significance

Mission Golden Spice can help Meghalaya leverage the GI-tagged identity and premium quality of Lakadong Turmeric by strengthening its value chain rather than limiting the focus to primary production.

For the agricultural economy of the Northeast, such initiatives can promote value addition, market linkages and income opportunities for farmers. The mission also reflects the broader approach of using the region's distinctive agricultural products to promote local economic development.

Overall, Mission Golden Spice represents a convergence-driven effort to transform Lakadong Turmeric into a stronger agricultural and value-added product while supporting Meghalaya's farmers and strengthening the Northeast's agri-economy.
