Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Introduction

Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha is in the news after the Odisha government’s proposal to resume tiger reintroduction received in-principle approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) in June 2026. The proposal follows a reassessment of the reserve and seeks to address the decline of its tiger population through habitat improvement, prey augmentation and stronger protection measures.

About Satkosia Tiger Reserve

Satkosia Tiger Reserve is located in Odisha across Angul, Cuttack, Boudh and Nayagarh districts. It comprises two adjoining protected areas Satkosia Gorge Sanctuary and Baisipalli Wildlife Sanctuary. The Mahanadi River flows through the reserve, forming the famous Satkosia Gorge.

The landscape lies at the meeting point of the Deccan Peninsula and the Eastern Ghats, giving it considerable ecological significance. Its terrain consists of hills, narrow valleys and slopes, with vegetation dominated by tropical moist deciduous forests and moist peninsular low-level sal forests.

The reserve supports species such as elephant, leopard, gaur, sambar, spotted deer, wild dog and sloth bear. It is also an important habitat for the gharial and freshwater crocodile, making the Mahanadi riverine ecosystem an important component of its biodiversity.

Why is Tiger Reintroduction in News?

Satkosia historically supported tigers, but its population declined sharply. An earlier attempt to restore the population was undertaken in 2018, when tigers were translocated from Madhya Pradesh.

The programme, however, did not succeed. The relocated male tiger was killed in a poacher's snare, while the translocated female, Sundari, became involved in human-wildlife conflict and was eventually returned. The experience highlighted problems related to prey availability, protection, habitat security and local community acceptance.

Following a fresh proposal by Odisha, the NTCA reassessed the feasibility of restarting the programme. A central committee examined the site and the Forest Department was subsequently asked to address several prerequisites before reintroduction could resume.

Conditions for Reintroduction

The NTCA's in-principle approval is conditional on improving the ecological and social conditions of the reserve. Key requirements include:

• Augmentation of prey species to ensure adequate food availability.
• Voluntary relocation of villages from critical areas where necessary.
• Creation of inviolate spaces for tigers.
• Capacity-building of forest staff for monitoring and protection.
• Strengthening anti-poaching and other protection measures.
• Assessment of the ground situation before actual tiger translocation.

This approach reflects an important shift in tiger conservation: reintroduction is not simply a matter of releasing animals into a forest. Habitat quality, prey density, protection, connectivity and community participation must be addressed beforehand.

Significance of Satkosia

Satkosia is important not only for tiger conservation but also for maintaining ecological connectivity in the Eastern Ghats-central Indian landscape. Its location along the Mahanadi and its connection with surrounding forest habitats make it significant for maintaining wider wildlife movement.

The reserve also illustrates the distinction between increasing India's overall tiger population and ensuring that tigers are well distributed across suitable habitats. The 2026 Tiger Conservation Roadmap has identified habitat restoration, prey recovery, landscape connectivity and scientifically planned reintroductions as priorities for struggling reserves. Satkosia's experience is particularly relevant to this approach.
